Al Moore

I was watching the classic film noir "The Asphalt Jungle" from 1950 the other day (brilliant movie by the way) and caught a glimpse of the 1949 Esquire Girl calendar by Al Moore. It happens that I just bought this calendar (the original not a reprint...) for Mischa as an anniversary gift -with the original envelope! Can you believe it was only 50 cent back then...

The calendar is in prestine condition considering it's 60 years old and Al Moore's ladies are just gorgeous!!

Maybe I'll post more of these ladies later on. For now you can enjoy Miss October -one of the more dressed ladies of the lot...

Area 51 -almost...

Last year in February we drove from Las Vegas through the mountains to Area 51 (or as close as we could get..) as a part of our honeymoon tour. Before taking off we went to buy a map and ask people how to get there. Everyone was very serious about it and didn't think it was a good idea to go there. They told us there was nothing to see and we couldn't get that far anyway 'cause if we crossed a certain outpost we would get shot on sight...

Going through the mountains we lost signal on our cell-phones and spooked each other talking about horror movies that begins with a young couple driving along an empty road running out of gas...

...and then finally we hit 'The Extraterrestrial Highway'...

..still no signal though...

We stopped in Rachel, Nevada in the middle of nowhere where there is a world famous small diner/bar. It's the most local world famous bar I've ever seen...very local...

The parking lot -basically a dirt lot...

We were soo hungry but after stepping into the diner where a foul smell hit us and the local gang were sitting listening to country music on a small transistor radio not looking very friendly at all we hurried up and bought some expensive alien souviners and decided to go back to where we came from...

On the way home again, still very hungry, we stopped at a gas station making sure not to run out of gas and to buy some semi-food (popcorn and Twizzlers..) We told the people that worked there about our trip and asked if we could have gotten closer to Area 51 and they told us about the dirt road that lead up it and about the shooting (a lot about the shooting..) and everything. There was a strange hostility everywhere we stopped and we were both very glad to get back to civilisation (if you can call Las Vegas that...)
We were hoping to see strange objects in the sky but it was the people on the ground that were the strangest of them all...

Speaking of meat....

Enjoi made this... Love the colors! -and even though it's dog meat carvings it still makes me hungry...

Boop-Oop-A-Doop!

Another favorite Betty... Grim Natwick (Who also helped animate Popeye and Snowwhite..) made her in ca. 1930 inspired by the original it-girl Clara Bow and Helen Kane who was the original boop-oop-a-doop girl and sang 'I wanna be loved by you' a long time before Marilyn Monroe did...
That curtain is amazing!

I love the slow wavy moves from the old cartoons.

I always though that Betty and Popeye should have hooked up...

Hunter

Dr. Hunter Stockton Thompson decided to end his life with a gunshot to the head 4 years ago today...he was 67.

"Football Season Is Over"
"No More Games. No More Bombs. No More Walking. No More Fun. No More Swimming. 67. That is 17 years past 50. 17 more than I needed or wanted. Boring. I am always bitchy. No Fun — for anybody. 67. You are getting Greedy. Act your old age. Relax — This won't hurt."

Six months later his ashes was shot out of a cannon by his close friend Johnny Depp while Bob Dylan's 'Mr. Tambourine man' was playing and fireworks filled the sky...

Technicolor rules!

I'm a huge fan of old movies, particularly the ones starring pin-up ladies in fancy technicolored costumes...
The queen of technicolor and my all time favorite pin-up girl is off course Betty Grable!
Her legs were insured for a million dollars and she was indisputably the top pin-up girl for American soldiers. Grable was the highest-paid female star in Hollywood by the end of the 1940s, receiving $300,000 a year!

The great pin-up artist Alberto Vargas (-probably my favorite..) is often credited with creating the artwork of for this beautiful poster for the movie 'Moon over Miami' from 1941 (starring Betty..) but it is believed that Vargas only did the work for the print ads, it's still stunning though...

She's so cheesecake...
-“I'm a song and dance girl. I can act enough to get by. But that's the limit of my talents.”
- "I have got two reasons for succes and I'm standing on both of them."
Betty Grable

This poster is from the lavish movie 'Ziegfeld Follies' from 1946 It's artwork is by another great pin-up artist George Petty and the movie is an absolute must-see if you love dancing ladies and fancy glittering costumes.

-the carrousel has real horses for crying out loud!

I've never been a big fan of Doris Day but I couldn't resist this picture of her and her technicolored poodles..

You cannot talk about technicolor and not mention 'The wizard of Oz'... Oh those ruby slippers...There's no place like home..

Meat, bloody meat!

I love meat! Unfortunalety it's been awhile since I've had a big blood-dripping steak...
These pictures make me hungry! 'The Butcher Bunny' by Mark Ryden reminds me of when I was a little girl and my grandmother would send me and my best friend Jesper to the butchers to pick up 'leverpostej' The smell of butcher shops is still one of my favorite smells ever!!! Look at the poor rabbit in the last picture, all is has left is it's 'lucky' feet....sad, but it just tastes sooo good..

Anniversary!

We live in a very small apartment and sometimes it makes me feel like this... Today is one of those days...  -by the way today is our 1 year wedding anniversary! It's hard to believe it's been a year since we went to the Little White Chapels drive-thru and got married for 40 bucks.. The weather was a bit better there but at least the sun is shining in Copenhagen today.
